Students in Sandymount Park ETSS do not wear a school uniform. We encourage diversity and self-expression however we believe that a dress code is part of the personal education of
students, and they are encouraged to become aware themselves of what is, and what is not, acceptable in terms of what they wear in the school environment. In order to facilitate this learning, students and their parents/guardians are given guidelines known as the Dress Code to help them make the right choices in terms of their school clothes and to realise that some forms of clothing are not appropriate for school.

The Dress Code Policy helps the school community to promote the school’s unique ethos, relationships, policies, procedures and practices that encourage positive behaviour and
optimise learning. The Policy helps pupils, parents and staff members to work together to achieve a happy, effective and safe school environment. We strive to create an ethos of
respect, inclusion, accountability and of commitment to relationships. This Dress Code Policy works in conjunction with the Code of Positive Behaviour, the AntiBullying Policy, SPHE and RSE policy. This Dress Code Policy also applies while on school outings, sporting events and trips. A positive proactive approach will be taken towards discipline and every effort will be made to implement this policy in a fair, reasonable and consistent manner.

This document communicates the responsibilities that students of Sandymount Park ETSS and their parent/guardian(s) accept when they enrol in the school. Please read this policy and sign the permission form to indicate your agreement with same.

At Sandymount Park ETSS we acknowledge the support of our parent body and anticipate that this support of the Dress Code will continue

Clothes
— Clothes worn to school must be clean, in good order and appropriate for daily school life.
— There must be no offensive slogans or pictures on clothing/bags etc.
— Underwear should never be seen.
— Leggings, jeggings, trousers etc should be made of fabric appropriate to the school environment.
— Shorts, skirts and dresses should be knee-length and made of fabric appropriate to the school environment.
— Flipflops, sliders must not be worn for health and safety reasons.
— Torn/ripped jeans may only be worn if the rips/tears are at the knee or below and do not pose a health and safety risk in the school environment.
— Vest tops/sleeveless tops must not be worn.
— Tops that expose the midriff must not be worn.
— Hats, hoods and other headgear (except for religious head coverings) must not be worn indoors.
— Outdoor coats cannot be worn in class.

Jewellery
— Jewellery should be appropriate to daily school life. Jewellery that is very long, loose or large is a health and safety issue in practical classes and on crowded corridors and should
not be worn.

Hair Styles
— Hair should always be clean
— A student’s eyes should not be covered by a hair style.

Make-Up
— While make-up is allowed in school it should be applied in moderation.
— False/acrylic nails that impede writing, typing or practical work must not be worn to school.

Students may be challenged in terms of dress code violations by staff.

This dress code should be read in conjunction with the Code of Behaviour. If a student is found to be repeatedly violating the dress code a meeting will be arranged with the student and their parents/guardians.

In certain circumstances, a student may be sent home to change their clothing following prior notification to parents/guardians.
